[Culture in the World] Have You Ever Been to a Ball Room?
Á¦ 143 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2013.10.07

The movie ¡®Pride & Prejudice¡¯ is the story where men and women free themselves from their ¡®pride¡¯ and ¡®prejudice¡¯and they feel real love. The movie vividly shows love that men and women go through today although the background of the movie is the 19th century in England, so it gains more empathy.
Beautiful and charming Elizabeth, who is the main character of the movie, meets Darcy, who is rich, at a ball in a mansion for the first time. At the ball, a musical band plays exciting and rhythmic music constantly. Ladies and gentlemen who dress formally move their feet quickly to the music and do a dance clapping with their partner¡¯s hands. After the ball, the couple meets again at a ball room. This time, the atmosphere is calm, which is different from the previous meeting. Quiet and soft music flows. Men and women join together and move, doing dance steps, rather than dance along with many people in the ball. Varous scenes of balls in England can be seen.
Since there was discrimination about status in the 19th century in England, a private meeting between men and women usually was made through a ball, which wasn¡¯t affected by the discrimination. A ball at that time was a way that men and women could confirm each other¡¯s love and convey their minds. In other words, a ball was the most important social activity for meeting good partners. There were two kinds of balls: an individual ball and a public ball. The individual ball was held at the mansion of the host and guests were limited to people who were similar with wealth and status. The public ball was popular because it was the only event where the nobility and commoners could meet each other. However, the two kinds of balls had something in common, which was socializing.
Have you ever been to a ball room? Whether you have been to a ball or not, why don¡¯t you see a ball? Through the movie ¡®Pride & Prejudice¡¯!
