On last October 5th, the International Olympic Committee(IOC) selected Rio de Janeiro in Brazil as the host of the 2016 Olympics. Up to now, the Olympics have been held 17 times in the nations of the European Union(EU), while it has not been held once outside the EU since Mexico city. That’s why the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro is a meaningful decision for South America, and it is the reason that the Olympics are called “the Olympics of South America.”
  Rio de Janeiro competed with Chicago, Madrid, and Tokyo to attract the Olympics. Unexpectedly, Chicago failed in the first vote, and Tokyo failed in the second vote. Finally, Rio do Janeiro competed with Madrid and won the victory.
  A reason that Brazil was selected to be host of the Olympics in competing with strong countries was the international name value of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who is the president of Brazil which has a prosperous economy. The president of Brazil was concerned with public growth of the economy because he succeeded in not only attracting the 2014 World Cup but also attracting the 2016 Olympics. Additionally, Brazil reversed a strong economic recession and stood firmly in the financial markets. Brazil increased its’ foreign exchange holdings from 74 billion dollars to 223 billion dollars, which is the highest in history. Next, the major effects of the reorganization of the international order after the financial crisis also helped Brazil. Stricken with financial crisis, the world was diverting  from advanced countries, the G7, to the growing power countries, the G20. The sports world is also doing this. The hosting of the Olympics is also diverting from the West to an emerging market.
  Rio de Janeiro overcame competing countries for the position of the host of the Olympics, but many effects will be needed for the success of the Olympics. First, more concrete and substantial investment is needed, and the disgrace of being called a crime city has to be wiped out. Also, improvement of the inferior infrastructure is necessary.
