There is a band which became popular after CBNU¡¯s festival in October. This band is called Hwang-So Band(Hwang-So is a Korean bull's name) whose members consist of CBNU staff members. It is considered the first selection for festivals in Chungbuk National University. Thus, a CBT reporter met its members and heard about their story.
¡á Introduction of the band
Hwang-So Band was organized in January, 2013 after team leader Kim Chang-hoe transferred to CBNU. He had an experience to be a leader of a band in his previous workplace. After transferring, he wondered why there was no staff band in CBNU because usually a workplace which is composed of over 50 to 100 staff members has a staff band. Moreover, he thought that making a band in CBNU would be helpful to promote the university, so he made Hwang-So Band. After making the band, some members were replaced because of the busy time schedule demanded of office workers. The reason for the name Hwang-So Band is that a bull is the symbol of our university. At the beginning, they thought that a Hangul name would look old-fashioned. However, there are a lot of English named bands, so they decided to name the band using Hangul.
¡á About their music
Their goal is playing music which makes people communicate with other people. For this reason, the songs which they usually play are hit songs mainly from the 70¡¯s and 80¡¯s because the average age of university staff is from the thirties to forties. The song which they have confidence to play is Cho Yong-pil¡¯s ¡®Mona Lisa¡¯, which was the most popular song in the 80¡¯s in Korea. However, they have done performances aimed at the younger people recently. Therefore, they have a song which the younger people listen to. The song is Lim Jae-bum¡¯s ¡®For you¡¯, which was one of the hit songs in the 2000s. Moreover, they plan to make their own songs and wish to play them on the stage someday.
¡á Memorable performance
They do performances primarily in CBNU. They said that their most memorable performance was CBNU¡¯s festival conducted in 2014. A popular girl group, Girls Day, came to the university, so there were so many people. They did a performance before Girls Day and felt too nervous. Thus, they said it was an unforgettable memory.
¡á Wish
They said working in a band vitalizes their daily lives, and they want to share this pleasure with other people. Thus, they planned to contribute their talent to kids who live in a social welfare facility, which is located in Cheong-ju. However, it was canceled due to the contagious disease called MERS, which spread in Korea earlier this year. In spite of it, they said they will go there this winter.
