CBNU Cafeterias are trying to satisfy students
Because of increasing living costs, more and more students attempt to lessen their financial burdens. Consequently, university cafeterias have grown in popularity recently.
However, university cafeterias are incurring the resentment of students because of the cafeterias` accommodations. Park Seung-joon (Dept. of Political Science and International Relations `11) said, "I usually use Hanbit Cafeteria four times a week because university cafeterias provide meals at low prices. However, there are always many students, so I have to wait for a long time." He attributed the cause of this trouble to meal ticket vending machines, which is originally supposed to make cafeterias easier to use.
In addition, there was much dissatisfaction with a relatively low standard of hygiene at university cafeterias. One student who studies statistics said, "Because of the manpower shortage, it seemed that there was no division of labor in university cafeterias. Not long ago, I visited Hanbit Cafeteria and saw a working woman who was cleaning a floor and providing a meal at the same time. After I saw that, I became disgusted and avoided visiting there again."
There are many students who posts complaints about university cafeteria menus on the internet site 'Daum CBNU Cafe'. One student said, "The side dishes of the ¡®Baekban lunch¡¯ were poor in quality. University students are red-blooded. However, it is hard to find meals with well-balanced nutrition. Sometimes, the question arises as to whether or not the meal is vegetarian." He expressed strong dissatisfaction with university cafeteria menus.
On the other hand, some students insisted that CBNU university cafeterias are good enough cafeterias for university students considering the recent inflation rate.
Park Young-min(Dept. of Physics `11) said, "Food prices of university cafeterias are cheap. Moreover, boisterous university cafeterias are good places to eat by myself. I usually eat lunch alone because of my time schedule. I agree that some side dishes are poor in quality. However, considering the inflation rate, it is good enough. One day, I saw other issues regarding poor cafeteria dishes in other universities as well in the news. I think the CBNU cafeteria is better than other universities` cafeterias." He expressed satisfaction with CBNU cafeterias.
A time to need students` understanding
University cafeterias feel resentful about the students` dissatisfaction. About the frequent vending machine trouble, a cafeteria officer said, "The vending machines in the cafeteria are old. However, they are expensive to replace by new ones. One vending machine costs 10 million won. There will be a budget problem if we try to change the vending machines. Last month on April 1st, 'Consumer Cooperatives' of CBNU was established. Consumer Cooperatives has no budget for investment, and it is a non-profit organization, so we do not have enough budget to buy new ones.
In response to the complaints, the cafeteria officer wants students to have objective points of view about cafeteria food quality. The cafeteria officer said, "CBNU cafeteria does not use instant food. We cook the food ourselves by using fresh ingredients. Most of the cafeteria food menu is cooked by hand. Therefore, there is a limit to provide students with various dishes. If we use instant food or MSG, the taste of the food will become delicious. However, we prepare a dish keeping in mind the students¡¯ health. We hope that students understand our efforts."
The university cafeteria officer added, "When we make a meal, we have to consider many things at the same time like personnel expenses, food expenses, and the students' health. Our policy is satisfying students, and the students` health is our top priority. Moreover, we use eco-pottery which has no endocrine-disrupting chemicals. We consider the dishes as well as the ingredients. We hope that students understand these things and visit the university cafeterias. "The university cafeterias will conduct a survey to get the students` opinions about the food menu. In addition, university cafeterias has announced their plan that they will conduct a research to provide foods with more varieties.
