[Culture Report]Gangneung, Where the Spirit of Sun-bi Is handed down
Á¦ 108 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2009.05.04

The citizens of Gangneung people liked reading, so the sound of their recited sentences was heard anywhere. Because of that reason, there are many people who enjoy art and literature, and many artists and writers were born in Gangneung. CBT went first to Ojukhun to see Sin-Saimdang and Lee-Ii.

*Ojukhun was named for black bamboo, like a crow, surrounding his house. Actually a bamboo fence surrounds Ojukhun. *Mongryoungsil, where Lee-ii was born, is in Ojukhun. Mongryoungsil, built in the early Joseon, is a typical building and it has been preserved in its original form. Therefore, black bamboo and Mongryoungsil are the background in the picture on the 5,000 won note. There is an ume tree, which is 600 years old, beside Mongryoungsil. The tree is deeply related to Lee-Ii and Sin-Saimdang. Sin-Saimdang, who liked the tree, drew ume flowers, and she named her daughter associated with ume. Also, the ink stone used by Lee-Ii was carved into the ume, and it has been handed down through the generations.

Walking several minutes from Ojukhun, you can see *Sunkyojang. The front field on Sunkyojang was Kyungpoho. Therefore, people made a bridge with a ship to go to the house across the lake, called ¡°Ship Bridge House(Sunkyojang).¡± However, we can¡¯t see Kyungpoho because the circumference of the lake decreased from 12Km to 4Km by putting soil in the lake.
Sunkyojang, chosen as one of the beautiful old houses, was built in the 17th century when journalism flourished. Many Sun-bi going on a tour stayed in Sunkyojang as a hotel. They got together and talked, and it became a political meeting place.

An ancestor said that if the moon rose on Kyungpoho, five moons appeared: ¡®The moon in the sky, the moon on the lake, the moon on the sea, the moon in a goblet and the moon which is reflected from a lover¡¯s eyes.¡¯ Kyungpoho, which means that the surface of the water is clean like a mirror, is one of eight graceful views. According to a story, the king wrote a script first on the picture drawn of Kyungpoho among many pictures. This episode shows Kyungpoho had a nice view. Cherry trees surround Kyungpoho, so the view in full cherry blossom is fantastic to look down on from Kyungpodae in April. Because ancestors read there and enjoyed this nice view, it is natural that many literary men were born in  Gangneung.
