Overcome Fear, and then Challenge
Á¦ 108 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2009.05.05
Architecture is a study that is not justified by words. It is a study that combines various cultures, history and people. Kim Jun-sung is an architect who builds buildings based on overseas experience. Let¡¯s listen to his speech about architecture exposing reality. -Ed.

When CBT arrived at his office on a rainy day, he came out to meet CBT. When CBT sat to interview, he gave us cups of coffee with a smile. He is one of 12 Korean architects who was chosen to answer a questionnaire for the department of architecture¡¯s monthly magazine ¡°Space.¡±

I want to do that?
He told us how he started in architecture. ¡°As soon as I graduated from high school, I emigrated to Brazil. At that time, architectural innovation was occurring in Brazil.¡± He was young, and he suffered from hardships during his emigration. Starting in architecture abroad, he also underwent trials. ¡°When I emigrated to Brazil, I had a hard time learning Portuguese. After that, I had slumps while studying architecture. It is because I felt alienated.
On that occasion, I looked at people around me. They were the students who had various experiences. If they had work that they wanted to study, they strived and accomplished that. I overcame the difficult time by following their examples.¡± He said that he could do everything that he wanted.
My ability is limitless
¡°I am used to hearing people¡¯s vocation is architecture. As I study, studying architecture is becoming harder. In foreign cases, universities are studying about various fields. Architecture is known as the study of graduate courses. It is said that preparing humanity is a priority. Before doing work, humanity has to be prepared.¡±
He has many teachers who helped him. He said, ¡°Among others, I remember Alvaro Joaquim De Melo Siza Vieira. He made me aware of what self-architecture was. Furthermore, he said that self-architecture should be examined. He taught me the ways to enjoy life.¡± He emphasized the importance of having a sense of value relative to others.
¡°I would like to find my architectural style. Lately, architects who declare themselves are disappearing. You should try to show all abilities.¡± He is still finding his architectural style. He also is advancing his abilities.
When you are young, you have to have many kinds of experiences
When he was studying abroad, he was sad because there was no contact with Koreans. However, there was something obtained more than lost. ¡°I have been fearless about other cultures because I emigrated when I was young. I have been working on architectural activities in Spain, Japan and America. Don¡¯t be afraid. If you found what you hope to do, you have to do it by fair means or foul.¡± It is not exactly easy to do what he said. CBT asked him what is needed to get rid of fear. He said, ¡°Get free from obsession! You need to be crazy about what you like. Then, be absorbed in one thing. If you do that, you will have an attitude that you can learn other things.
