The problem of unmarried mothers is one social problem occurring continuously. Also, the outbreak of unmarried mothers and the problems which have originated from the problem of unmarried mothers―where to live, how to raise their child, and the negative perception about them― gave them lots of difficulty.
From the investigation about the recognition of the social view toward unmarried mothers, 47.2 percent of people replied, “Give a cold reception,” and 38 percent of people answered, “Point the finger at them.” This survey shows how many people have a negative attitude to the unmarried mothers. The view from families is also negative. Moreover, the attitudes of unmarried fathers where they don’t want to take responsibility of pregnancy cause many difficulties to unmarried mothers.
The first difficulty which unmarried mothers face is a financial problem. It is difficult to ask for help because family members cannot understand them and society gives them a frigid reception. For these reasons, they have to solve economic problems―the costs of pregnancy, child birth and bringing up children― by themselves. Consequently, lots of unmarried mothers send their babies to orphanages or give their babies up for adoption, instead of bringing them up. The mothers who are bringing up their children also have a problem:  getting a job. Even if they are employed, there is another problem: the cost of bringing up children.
The second difficulty is the mental pressure which is given to unmarried mothers. Nobody congratulates their pregnancy and child birth. A fierce rebuke and responsibility are imposed on them, and they are stigmatized as unmarried mothers their whole life. This situation makes them have mental uneasiness; fear of society, a sense of shame, despair, and a feeling of guilt. This uneasiness causes the loss of their self-identities.
Even if they made a mistake once, nobody has the right to trample unmarried mothers’ lives. They do their best to take their responsibility of the mistake and take care of their babies. Moreover, they live their lives fighting with the social stigma and themselves every day. In the near future, a society where unmarried mothers can claim their rights confidently has to be built.
