Recently, the fame of sports in Korea has been rising. Because of the good results from the tournament this year, we can find out about Korea’s reputation in sports and the deep patriotism of Koreans who live abroad.
Different from people who live in Korea, overseas Koreans seem to have little self-confidence and identification that they are Koreans. Also, lots of foreign news about Korea is bad because they are living in a foreign country. When news about Korea is broadcast by foreign mess media, the scale of the news is really big for all Koreans and arouses people’s curiosity, but it is usually bad news. This news decreases the pride of Koreans.
However, overseas Koreans became more prideful of Korea because of the Olympic games. Park Tae-hwan won a gold medal in swimming and was the first Asian to do that. Jang Mi-ran set a world record in the women’s weight lifting competitions, and the Korean baseball team won a gold medal in Olympic baseball. These victories made Koreans abroad feel joy and have pride which only Koreans living abroad could feel.
However, two other sports tournaments this year connected Koreans living in Korea and Korean living overseas. Koreans abroad became a passionate audience of the WBC and World Figure Skating Championships. At the same time, they became a passionate Korean cheering party. These features showed how much they love Korea.
All of these sports tournaments gave a chance for Korea to confirm the pride of Koreans abroad. They linked Koreans who lived in Korea and abroad. Lots of bad news may give despair to the Koreans abroad in the future. However, Korea will get together with the name of “The Proud Koreans” through many sports tournaments and another supplements.
