Recently, a famous drama called ¡®SKY Castle¡¯ ended with tremendous popularity. The reasons why ¡®SKY Castle¡¯ was so popular were the skill of the actors and the exciting storyline, but I think that the biggest factor is that it reflected the reality of Korean society well. In the drama, one student tells a lie that she entered Harvard University because of her parents¡¯ desire for her to go to a prestigious university. Another students¡¯ mother wants her daughter to enter Seoul National University by using a consultant. A consultant helps students enter a university regardless of means and methods and also helps write self-introductions. Students need a variety of experiences, including not only studying but also volunteering and winning contests, to enter a university. In reality, many people hire consultants. I think that the drama showed one of the biggest problems in Korean society: education equality. Therefore, it attracted people¡¯s interest and empathy and led to a hot reaction.
In the drama, SKY Castle is a residential area where professors at medical schools or law schools live. SKY is an acronym for the prestigious universities in Korea: Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University. Through these symbolic schools, the drama showed the educational reality. The opinion that parents¡¯ finances are a factor in success rather than the students¡¯ efforts is prevalent throughout our society. Children who lack the financial resources of their parents often fail to enter university. However, other children with wealthy parents, such as those characters who live in SKY Castle, have many opportunities to take private education, so they can get a better chance to enter the university. ¡®SKY Castle¡¯ has shown this social problem well.
Many people were not aware of the problems with education. However, though the drama, some people can learn about the problems of education. Some parents are concerned that they must do more for their children. I heard that one parent was more concerned about providing private education for the children to enter a university than about the educational issues after watching ¡®SKY Castle¡¯. We can lose important years of our life just because of university. In the drama, there is a father who became a doctor after graduating from a prominent university. However, he always studied for a university because his parents emphasized only studying to him. Finally, he became an adult with no insight into life or critical thinking skills, and he repeated the same mistakes. Therefore, his daughter suffered. Many people think about going to a prestigious university without awareness about what they want to do or what they like because university is deemed important for success. As a result, the problem of private education is becoming increasingly serious.
¡®SKY Castle¡¯ has shown the problems of university education in Korean society. Many viewers only focus on the problems of university education. Therefore, the show succeeded in spotlighting the issue of education, which is a serious issue in Korean society. The education system should be improved through public opinion. Students who don¡¯t know what to do need to have a chance to think about themselves and their life. As in the drama, there are many people who have entered university without clear goals. I too was studying because others were studying. However, when I thought about what I liked, I found a dream. Now, I¡¯m studying to do what I want to do. If students are not thinking about themselves, I hope that they will be able to take some time for introspection for a better and happier future.
