[Reporter¡¯s View] What Do You Think about Public Displays of Affection(PDA)?
Á¦ 165 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2016.05.30

I¡¯ve lived in one of the CBNU dormitories, YangJinJae, since last year. The funny thing is that I¡¯ve seen many couples smooching in the dorm quite often unlike last year. There is a lobby where students can take a rest on some couches or use some facilities. Whenever I walk past the lobby, I frown at some couples kissing or hugging.
As far as I am concerned, I tend to think of PDA as shameful behavior. When I had a relationship with someone, I used to refuse to kiss or something like that in public. It doesn¡¯t mean that I don¡¯t love my significant other. I just don¡¯t want to make others feel offended. I think if someone feels offended by my behavior, I must stop doing it even though I didn¡¯t mean to make them feel like that.
When it comes to PDA, not only does every person have different opinions on it, but also there isn¡¯t any correct answer for this matter. However, older people usually have a conservative view on PDA compared to younger people. The reason of this tendency might be because our country has been hugely influenced by the Confucian culture from old times, and there is even an adage in Confucianism, ¡®A boy and a girl should not sit together after they have reached the age of seven.'
Sometimes, when we see some romantic scenes in movies or dramas where protagonists kiss each other in public, we have a tendency to consider them to be the most beautiful moments. In contrast with it, in reality, people usually don¡¯t want to see others smooching in front of them. As a result of it, there exists a certain law regarding this matter. According to the law, a person who does an obscene action in public is fined for it.
As such, there isn¡¯t any clear or absolute criterion on the matter, and the criterion also can be different depending on a person. In my opinion, it is so important that we keep trying not to make others feel uncomfortable so that we can live together without any discord. If we live with this thought, most of the problems that result from people¡¯s different thoughts, like the PDA problem, will be solved with ease.
