[Editorial] Schrödinger¡¯s Cat
Á¦ 161 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2015.11.30

Sometimes, the concept of scientific definition is used in the social sciences or the humanities. Entropy is a typical example. Even though entropy is very difficult to understand in chemistry or physics, some people who have not studied chemistry or physics can talk about entropy easily. If someone said that entropy has increased spontaneously when seeing a messy room. Whether they understand entropy or not, they can pretend that they know about it. In thermodynamics, entropy is understood as a measure of disorder. Thus, they may explain their messy home using entropy. However, the concept of entropy is more complex than they think.
Another scientific word is very popular in social science. This is not a word but a paradox. In 1935, the Austrian physicist Erwin Schrödinger raised a problem about the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics. Schrödinger imagined taking a cat and placing it in a sealed box containing radioactive material that had a 50% chance of killing the cat in the next hour. At the end of that hour, he asks,¡°What is the state of the cat?¡± Common sense suggests that either the cat is still alive or is now dead. According to quantum physics, since we cannot see into the box to know if the cat is alive or dead, the cat would be both alive and dead at the same time. Of course, we know that this is not possible, since nothing can be both alive and dead at the same time. This is Shrödinger¡¯s point and just what Schrödinger wanted to show. It is only when the box is opened that we can see a single definite state.
It is interesting that this paradox can be applied to a relationship between a man and a woman. There is something special between him and her. He asks her out once and they enjoy dinner and a movie together. Sometimes they text each other like a beautiful couple does. As time goes by, she is suddenly confused about whether he likes her or does not give a hoot. She does not know his thoughts just as we do not know the state of the cat in the sealed box. This is completely the same situation as Schrödinger¡¯s cat paradox. There is a 50% probability that he likes her and a 50% probability that he does not. The probabilities of our emotions may not exist in our relationships, but we are still confused about the relationships between men and women. Just as a cat is simultaneously alive and dead in quantum physics, our relationships are not so simple. However, there is only way to solve this problem. OPEN THE BOX. When we open the box, we can know exactly if the cat is alive or dead. In our relationships, opening the box is telling someone about what is in your heart. If you tell someone that you love them, you will figure out exactly what they are thinking. Open your box before it is too late.
