CBNU Students Manage Their Own Careers

Chungbuk National University has managed the ¡®Career Management System¡¯ (hrdcareer.cbnu.ac.kr) since 2011. The Career Management System is a system that was made to store and manage students¡¯ careers for themselves until they graduate. Each department has a classification system that is right for each department and estimates students¡¯ careers. Some departments are utilizing ranked students¡¯ careers for selecting overseas trainees, awarding scholarships and recommending employment.


 

The Career Management System¡¯s ID is the student¡¯s ID number, and the password is the last six digits of the student¡¯s resident registration number. Students can input, edit and delete fields about careers by using the menu ¡®Managing results about performing careers.¡¯ Students should obtain certification to complete input by attaching files that scan relevant results or by submitting relevant results directly at department offices. After obtaining certification, modification is impossible. Every activity where students can receive certification can be input as a career. Students can know career activities that their department recommends by using the menu ¡®Showing classification system.¡¯

 Many students said, ¡°I can take a quick glance by organizing my career into one place.¡± This system has the advantage of informing students of certifications or activities that are lacking and storing them to prepare for employment. The school can make good use of making a new curriculum and compiling statistics by checking student¡¯s careers in this system.

 However, in a study of 122 CBNU students, many students have had many inconveniences when they have used the Career Management System. The typical inconveniences are cumbersome certification and a complicated classification item. One student said, ¡°I experienced my career was unregistered, even if I attached a scanned file.¡± Another student said, ¡°I don¡¯t know where to upload my career because of a similar classification system.¡± Human Resources Development Center (HRC) said, ¡°The problem about certification is an inevitable circumstance because corporations demand correct information about careers when students prepare for employment. The way that we ascertain whether this activity actually happened or not is only certification through scanning. On the other hand, we appreciate about the problem of the complicated classifications, so we plan to continually make up for this problem. We are planning to construct new databases to promote ease in November.¡±

 Meanwhile, 70% of CBNU students do not use the Career Management System, and 79% of them don't know about this system. 14% of them answered, ¡°I know about this system, but I don¡¯t use this system because I do not feel the need to use it.¡± 5% of them said, "This system is difficult," and 2% of them said,"¡®This system is tiresome." HRC said, ¡°I think the reason why students do not know about this system is that they are not interested in this system, not because of the lack of public relations. Every program that HRC has run is only used by students who have interest and volition. Students don't have more interest about the Career Management System because this system does not have a large merit. Therefore, we are trying to appeal to students by connecting this system with scholarships. Departments that have high employment rates directly inform students of the Career Management System, so students¡¯ application rates are high. The College of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Education, which are almost not associated with employment, have high application rates because every college¡¯s students want to receive honor scholarships.¡±

 The Career Management System has already been used in many universities. Some universities successfully implemented this system, while most universities gave up this system as a fifth wheel due to students¡¯ low participation and incomplete systematization. Chonbuk National University, which is seen as a success case, has enforced ¡®Let¡¯s Go Plan¡¯, which is like the Career Management System since the second semester of 2007. Chonbuk National University¡¯s program is composed of a ¡®Grade Belt.¡¯ A freshman has a white belt which demands that they know information of their majors, a sophomore has a yellow belt which means they have to focus on finding jobs that they want or they like, a junior has a blue belt which means they have to find and know about corporations that they want to work for, and a senior has a red belt which means they have to focus on employment. Only students who satisfy their required conditions, which are on their own belts, can pass to the next belt the next year.

 HRC said, ¡°We are planning to combine the Career Management System with Gaesin Talent Education. We are building a database about overlapping contents between the Career Management System and Gaesin Talent Education.¡±
