It is fundamental for a reporter to make a fair and prompt report despite any external pressure. Also, it is a rule to report facts objectively, and reporters are supposed to report various news topics for the people. I¡¯m a reporter. As a reporter, I write articles that need to be reported on for my readers¡¯ rights to pertinent information. To write an article, a reporter can choose any issue. For the sake of people¡¯s rights, however, there are no regulations about writing articles.
Last October, there was news of the death of a female entertainer. Her bereaved family wanted to hold a quiet funeral and asked reporters to cooperate. However, one reporter published an article about the funeral. Netizens said it was both an insult and an injury to her family. The article has since been deleted, and the reporter who wrote the article has been a talking point on many websites. The story made me think twice about the role of a reporter. Reporters must not think it¡¯s a privilege not to be under any external pressure just because they are reporters. If the news is something that can be delivered to people regardless of external pressure, it is necessary to play the role faithfully, and it is not right to think of it as a privilege.
I think that a good reporter should never compromise their humanity. A reporter needs to report despite any external pressure for the public good. Also, they must not write articles only to slander someone who doesn¡¯t need to be slandered. If the role of a reporter is simply to inform people about any news in society, then reporters are no different from people who just fabricate rumors. When I write an article, I have to recognize the side effects that might affect society. Also, when writing articles that seem to lack specific facts and/or proof or are socially problematic, reporters need to consider whether they should report the news or not. Therefore, it is proper for reporters to write news with humanity. Writing news without humanity can confuse readers, and it could cause the readers to lose faith in journalism.
If a reporter feels guilty, it means that they are losing their humanity. Reporters may have had a hard time writing articles once. Therefore, it is necessary to consider in-depth whether humanity or the right to know should come first. In my thought, as a person, humanity should come first. Sometimes I think, ¡°How important is the right to know? Can people write news without humanity?¡± Of course, the right to know can be important when it comes to letting readers know about social injustice and disadvantages. However, there is not always such kind of news these days.
I have experienced and realized many things in my job as a college reporter. When I first started as a reporter, I used to report everything I wanted to report and to write news about only topics that I was interested in. However, after reading and thinking about various articles, I found out how foolish I was. Thus, I thought in my way that the role of a reporter and its standards needed to be clear. Also, because I am a college reporter, I have to play both the role of a reporter and my college life at the same time. That¡¯s why sometimes the idea of a college student outstrips my duty as a journalist in various situations. This was the first time that I had to think about what humanity a reporter should have.
I¡¯m one person before I¡¯m a reporter. And I want to keep being a person before a reporter. I can¡¯t consider my career as a journalist and my life divided accurately and objectively, but I will always try to balance myself with that of a reporter. Readers¡¯ right to know is important, but above all, people¡¯s humanity should precede it.
