[Desk Column] To Acknowledge the Difference

Many of us interact with many people every day. For example, if you are a college student, you can go on a field trip with people from all over the country and meet new people everywhere. If you live like that, sometimes your values conflict with those of others. The reason why I choose the word ¡®conflict¡¯ is that there is a disjunction between other people¡¯s values and our own values. It doesn¡¯t matter if it¡¯s just an idea, but, when it is spoken out loud to incite others, problems can occur.
Conflicts of values can be a problem between individuals or between groups. For example, you can see the differences between the younger and the older generations. There may have been times when generations who used to study with books were unhappy to see students studying with their smartphones and videos. The familiar saying ¡®In our time¡¦.,¡¯ is the most typical expression of forced values in Korea. However, I¡¯m going to talk about the problems that may arise in college life as a college student.
Every college student has considered the term ¡®outsider¡¯ as a bad nickname. This refers to those who do not mix with others in college and who do not belong to mainstream groups. Who has the right to name someone as an outsider? No one has such a right. The thing to differentiate here is whether an outsider really wants to socialize or not. It is also questionable whether someone who is more comfortable staying alone can be nicknamed an outsider by others. Students don¡¯t have a right to do so just because they don¡¯t understand the behaviors of others.
Why do people tend to ostracize those who are different? If someone doesn¡¯t think he or she is much different from other people but is still ostracized, he or she might naturally feel jealous. Perhaps, this happens because we are living in the same competitive structure as others. The idea that we should be superior to others might prevail in our minds. When someone does something unique or weird, people think they are different, and, if they find a flaw in another person, people tend to dig deeper into the wound. Also, they tend to hide their own flaws to avoid being a victim. People usually interact with someone similar with themselves, and they then develop into different people naturally. They can get along well with each other, but they neglect people who are different.
I think it is immature behavior for an adult to disparage or not to recognize others for their different values. College life can also be viewed as a small society. Conflict within the boundaries of a school can be solved when people work together, but the real outside world is not like that. This is why students undergo trial and error and mature step by step. I hope I can recognize and accept the different values of others. This, in turn, will lead to a lot of acquired experience. We should realize and acknowledge how many people have different ideas.
