I always used to write down the college and department I aimed for on a small paper during my high school days. Just getting into a prominent university was my goal, like other students in my teenage years. I thought that getting into a prominent university was the only way for the good jobs and a stable life.
I never put on my thinking cap for my dream, so I couldn¡¯t find what I really wanted. The more I thought about it, the more I got stuck and could not define my target. When I was preparing for university applications, my worries flashed through my mind, ¡®Is it the right way I ought to go from here?¡¯ I am a 22-year-old student who has lost my direction and purpose in life, and I still have no idea which way I should go.
The Cheshire Cat of Alice in Wonderland said, ¡°That depends a good deal, on where you want to get to.¡±
¡°I have not thought about where I want to go.¡± Alice (I) said.
¡°Then, it doesn¡¯t matter which path you take, does it?¡± said the Cheshire Cat.
That¡¯s right. I don¡¯t care about where I am going because I don¡¯t have a dream. Without even knowing that the answer to my question was simple, I was very impatient as I watched others mark places they were going to go on the map. I left my anxiety about a succession of choices behind, and from now on I will do my best in my current situation. I will experience different things to find my dream because I don¡¯t know what I¡¯m going to do yet. I am currently taking some courses in teaching and scientific experiments on molecular biology and working for an English newspaper job. It is part of the process of getting to know my dream. However, I will begin lots of new adventures in my life. Only time will tell me what the adventures will be.
No matter which way I take, I will take the first step toward my adventure, which will ultimately be the way for my goals. With a fearful mind, I will take the first step for achieving my goal, because ¡°Every adventure requires a first step.¡± -Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
Nobody knows what the end of the road or what the roads will be like, but no matter where I go, I¡¯ll definitely reach my destination and I can develop myself through the many people I meet on the trip to my destination.
If there are other seniors and juniors who have lost their way like me, think of the Cheshire Cat¡¯s words. It doesn¡¯t matter which way you go in your life. Do not find your way on the maps created by others. Though it will make you walk a bit more, walk on your own map and take your own path thinking about where you are from.
I will cheer for all of us who are taking our own paths because this is only our first attempt anyway.
