Traditional markets were formed based on the region. However, nowadays, traditional markets contain temporary markets, permanent markets and street vendors. Chungbuk has a total of 14 permanent markets in Cheong-ju. 5 traditional markets exist in Sangdang-gu and 9 markets are in Heungdeok-gu. Yukguri market is not Chungbuk's representative market but is a traditional market. Yukguri market, which is the largest one in Cheongju, has 1,200 shops and open-air stalls brought together in one place. Yukguri market drew attention when it launched its brand marketing by issuing gift cards for the first time in the nation. Yukguri market covers an area of 4,543,387 square-meters and is well-equipped with convenient facilities.

However, including Yukguri market, many traditional markets' sales have declined lately. Park Sung-hoon, a merchant, said, “Most people do not want to go to traditional markets because they pursue convenience, so sales are off since the major supermarkets took over the markets.” Chungbuk, Cheong-ju is trying to invigorate the Yukguri market. First, Yukguri market is holding a show, a parade, a concert and a pantomime show to attract customers to Yukguri market. In addition, Yukguri market issued gift cards for the first time in the nation. Therefore, Yukguri market sales have increased. Kim Ki-ha, a merchant, said, “Gift cards were an encouragement to merchants. People come to traditional markets to use them. Therefore, gift cards should be used more and more.” For convenient consumption, Cheong-ju made an agreement with BC card company. BC card company will supply the latest credit card terminals to Yukguri market merchants. By introducing latest terminals, customers can go shopping only with credit cards and mobile cards which are published by BC card company. Therefore, customers using a traditional market will have convenience.

With this effort, Chungbuk was selected as the best province in traditional market planning by the Small and Medium Business Administration. Chea Gyeong-ho, who is a representative merchant of Yukguri market, won the President's Award.
