What I felt while working as a university newspaper reporter at Chungbuk Times (CBT) for two years was that the topics of the articles were very limited. University students are adults, but they have to learn a lot. Also, students take higher education, but they are not experts. Many university students feel difficulties expressing their thoughts logically.
When I was a reporter trainee about this time last year, I wrote a column for the first time. At that time, I felt suffocated writing articles according to the strict plan of CBT. For that reason, I decided that I would do my best when I had a chance to write a column where I could write my own thoughts.
I made a decision to write about mental depression and I studied it very hard because I wanted to do well on my first column. I felt a sense of satisfaction after finishing my article which required strenuous effort sentence by sentence. However, an officer of CBT said my column topic was inadequate for a university student. My article was unreliable because it was written by a student, not a mental depression expert. I was very distressed and I finally had to change my topic regarding my university life.
At that time, I was confused about which topics could be written by university students. I eventually changed to another topic, but I regretted that I couldn¡¯t write what I wanted to say with conviction. Everyone has their own opinions though they are not experts. I had to make an effort to formulate my opinions logically rather than change to a topic which was easy to write. Students practice writing skills to express their own opinions during university life, even though they are not experts. Of course, they have to take responsibilities about their writing. However, many students try to write to be seen by other people rather than writing what they want to say.
Everyone has their own thoughts. An effective way for expressing one¡¯s thoughts is writing. The most important factor in writing is not to be seen but that they have to express their own opinions more obviously.
