A new semester began. Students make a lot of plans for developing themselves at this season. Some of them wish to get A grades and someone wants to improve English ability. others register private institution to learn various computer skills. Library is always packed with students who want to obtain many kinds of qualifi cations. University is a place in which students acquire knowledge. However, the society is changing rapidly. The value of knowledge
itself is downgrading because now we can get the knowledge needed from web surfi ng easily. Then what are the necessary virtues for young students to take? And what kind of a person the world requires nowadays? Last year Sookmyung Women’s University was chosen as the first women’s university to operate ROTC program after competing with seven women’s universities. I thought that the university wanted to attain the effectiveness of advertisement and enhance the recognition of university for inducing new students by operating the ROTC program for women. But I found that my judgement was wrong before long. I read the interview with the president of Sookmyung Women’s University in the newspaper. She emphasizes leadership and responsibility as virtues which students should acquire during school days in the interview. she is also well-known as courageous woman. After reading interview, I understand the reason why the president made an effort to found ROTC in the university with all her might. She wanted to use ROTC program as one of ways for students to cultivate leadership, responsibility and courage. I gave students assignment for discussing a person after reading biography in class and asked a question whether Admiral Lee Soon Shin can get a job when we assume that he come to the world of twenty fi rst century where we live through time machine from the past. He cannot speak English. He even don’t know America exists on the other side of the globe. He cannot handle computer and he has no experience to use smart phone. It seems impossible for young Lee Soon Shin to obtain a job in this age when youth unemployment rate is so high. The only job he can get is maybe a very diffi cult and dangerous one for which many foreign laborers work now. On that work place, he will work so diligently and never complain about heavy task. Sometimes he will stay overnight to fi nish the work assigned to him by the due date. He will be recognized by the president of the company and be promoted to senior manager before long not because of his SPEC but because of his sincerity, sense of responsibility and faithfulness. All the students agreed with this scenario. We are living in a fl ood of information and knowledge. Cultivating a good personality is more important than learning simple knowledge in this age for students who desire to lead a successful life.
