Libraries in the U.S.A. have many different functions in comparison with those of Korea. The function is not limited to checking out books. Activities for local communities, free English lessons for foreigners, notifications for exhibitions are all available for local residents whenever they want. It means that public libraries function as essential infrastructures.
There are as many as 89 public libraries.
The New York Public Library, known as the library having the greatest scale, consists of 4 research libraries and 85 branches. It has more than one hundred million book materials. It is so popular as an attraction that many tourists visit it every year.
Convenience for library users is basic.
In the U.S., visitors can find sofas and small tables instead of a reading room in libraries. Leaning their body against a wall or sitting on a sofa, visitors can read the book comfortably.
A mobile library also offers convenience to people. A lot of libraries have a book delivery system. The libraries deliver books to people who order the books by telephone or Internet.
Plentiful books and diverse programs
Book materials include various contents including books. Library members can check out materials such as DVDs and pictures, even stage costumes or scores. The Donnell Library Center has independent films and documentaries, more than 8,500, and the Mid-manhattan Library has as many as 12,000 photo collections for illustrators and publishers.
Cooperation between schools and public libraries.
Usually, most of the library users are students. Therefore, public libraries conduct diverse activities to help the students. In the case of the Seattle Public Library, it is running five centers to help students do their homework. Students usually receive help from college students, who are volunteers.
