CBT interviewed the Doyak campaign members as they are running for the Student Council election in 2020. The interview was conducted to help school members understand the campaign pledges and encourage them to vote.
Jan. 28th to Feb. 3rd 2020 was the enrollment period for CBNU students to sign up for classes. Any college student appreciates the importance and urgency of enrollment especially because it is a first-come-first-served system.
Teaching assistants from each of the CBNU department create the first semester schedules for freshmen. Therefore, there were a lot of freshmen who didn¡¯t experience signing up for classes in person and still didn¡¯t know anything about the enrollment procedures and methods. So, I want to share some important pointers to help CBNU students navigate the enrollment systems with confidence. I hope that this article will help them to use the enrollment systems efficiently. Before finding out more about the systems itself, I want to mention necessary information regarding the enrollment for freshmen.
Enrollment is usually conducted in the order of fourth, first, third and second graders, and each grade is allocated two days to enroll. This is followed by a correction and cancellation period, before and after the start of classes. Students are only allowed to change or cancel classes during the correction periods, and changing or adding classes will be impossible during the cancellation period. CBNU students can check the annual enrollment period in the ¡®Schedule¡¯ menu on the CBNU homepage or application. Also, it can be found on each department¡¯s homepage.
Before students sign up for classes, they have to know which classes are required for graduation. They should pay special attention to details like required major, selected major, required liberal arts and selected liberal arts, etc. Students must take the required major and liberal arts classes and they can choose those selected major and liberal arts classes that they want to take. There are also minimum/maximum credits students must fill to graduate. This information is also posted on each department¡¯s homepage, and students can find it under the ¡®Credits for enrollment¡¯ menu of the CBNU ¡°Gaesin-nuri¡± homepage.
Unfortunately, students can¡¯t sign up for all classes they may want to take in the enrollment period. There is a restricted maximum grade, which differs by department. Students can get the relevant detailed information by looking at the table below.
Grade A0 or higher is equal to a grade point average (GPA) of 3.6. Even if the grades in the last semester are above grade A0, those with less than 15 credits will be required to sign up for additional classes. Now that you have the information about enrollment, let¡¯s find out more about the enrollment systems.
There are lots of enrollment systems, but I will explain in detail about the Shopping Basket System, the Subject of Interest System, the Inquiring Established Courses System, the Finding Vacant Courses System and the Applying for Courses at the Designated Time System. These are the most important methods. You should note that the Shopping Basket System, the Subject of Interest System and the Established Courses Inquiry System are existing methods, while the Finding Vacant Courses System and the Enrollment System at the designated time are newly introduced methods this year.
Let¡¯s learn about the existing methods. First, there is an Inquiring Established Courses System. The Inquiring Established Courses System shows information about how lectures are conducted, how grades are evaluated, the books and the courses¡¯ weekly plan. Also, students can find out how many people put the class in their shopping basket through this system. The Inquiring Established Courses System can be selected from the ¡®Class Information¡¯ option on the CBNU ¡°Gaesin-nuri¡± homepage.
Second, there is the Shopping Basket System. The Shopping Basket System allows students who wish to take specific courses to reserve the courses and not on a first-come-first-served basis. When students put classes into the shopping basket, they can do so regardless of the number of classes. However, they can only select classes within their credit limit. Moreover, the method offers students the convenience of registering for classes directly on the shopping basket list during the enrollment period. The method can be selected from the CBNU Enrollment homepage by clicking the ¡®Shopping Basket¡¯ banner.
Lastly, there is a Subject of Interest System. It allows for classes to be stored as a backup option in case students fail to sign up for a subject in the shopping basket. It can be stored even if it exceeds the possible credit limit. Students can sign up for lectures directly without searching for lectures during the enrollment period like the Shopping Basket System. However, using the Subject of Interest System is slightly slower than using the Shopping Basket System. The Subject of Interest System can also be selected from the CBNU enrollment homepage.
The systems were adopted to facilitate fast and convenient registration but there were some inconveniences. Lee Yu-seok (¡¯19 Dept. of Urban Engineering) said, ¡°On the old systems, it was hard to check whether the courses I wanted to register for conflicted or not. Also, it was inconvenient that if I failed to register for the popular liberal arts courses, I had to constantly check whether any vacancies came up.¡± To eliminate these inconveniences, the 2019 Student Council, ¡®Synergy¡¯ adopted the new system.
The Vacant Courses System is adopted for finding the courses that do not overlap with the required subjects. Students can also select this system from the CBNU ¡°Gaesin-nuri¡± website. Any vacancies that come up because of the cancellation of liberal arts classes will be shown in real time if students use the Applying for Courses at the Designated Time System. However, students will not be able to register for the courses in real-time. Those who want the vacancies only can sign up for the courses at the designated time (9 AM, 1 PM, 5 PM and 9 PM). For example, if a course is at full capacity at 9:30 AM and the vacancies come up at 10:30 AM, students can only sign up for the course at 1 PM. This system is adopted not only to prevent the trade of lectures between students but also to give students fair opportunities to sign up for courses when any vacancies come up.
That, in short, is a concise summary of the CBNU enrollment systems. Applying for the right courses is of vital importance since it affects both the day to day experience of students as well as their graduation. I sincerely hope that CBNU students are well-informed of the new systems and that they will be able to sign up for the courses successfully using the systems effectively for the rest of the school year.
Additionally, I would also like to remind all freshmen that there are friendly assistants in every department who are willing and able to help you with registration. Feel free to get in touch with them at any time.
