In 2018, the majority of domestic universities are going through difficulties in school management due to a lack of students. Starting with the 2020 university entrance exam to be held in 2019, the number of those who will enter universities is going to be higher than the number of high school graduates the so-called ¡°university reversal phenomenon.¡± In 2021, three years from now, more and more colleges and universities will be shut down due to a failure to accommodate the quota for freshmen. For the 2021 university entrance exam, there will be 90,000 more people being admitted to universities than high school graduates. If this shortage of students continues, which will aggravate schools¡¯ financial situations, it is estimated that more universities will continuously go out of business.
Amid such a dramatic decrease in the number of freshmen, Mr. Yoon Yeo-pyo, President of CBNU, and some staff members from the Confucius Academy visited Yanbian University in China on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 to foster talented people with global senses through joint management and to discuss the joint management of the Yanbian University¡¯s Hunchun campus, a co-op with CBNU.
Since 2016, Yanbian University has asked CBNU to participate in the joint management of the Hunchun campus. CBNU finally signed the agreement with Yanbian University to work together for the joint management of the Yanbian University¡¯s Hunchun campus, which will start in September 2018.
Yanbian University was founded on March 20, 1949 in Yanji, the autonomous district for ethnic Koreans in Yanbian. In 1996, Yanbian University was selected as one of the primary construction universities for China¡¯s ¡®11 Project¡¯, and it was chosen as one of the major universities for China¡¯s Western development. Yanbian University is being developed as a priority by the Ministry of Education.
Currently, along with 20 colleges and 68 faculties affiliated with the Departments of Science and Engineering, Agriculture, Medical Science, Art, Humanities, Languages, Economics, Law, and Sports, there are 10 departments for doctorate degrees and 78 departments for master¡¯s degrees.
The Yanbian University¡¯s Hunchun campus, which will be a joint operation of CBNU and Yanbian University, is equipped with lecture buildings, a library, a GRP stadium, practical buildings, dormitories, and faculty rooms.
After its opening, CBNU will recruit 300 to 500 students to run a Korean language curriculum. Students who have finished the Korean language curriculum will be able to choose their major.
Yoanna Cho, who is in International Relations at the Office of International Services of CBNU, answered questions about the purpose of the global campus and the future plans.

  1. Purpose
    - Based on the agreement signed between our university and Yanbian University on February 28, 2018, we will carry out the joint management of the curriculum at the Yanbian University¡¯s Hunchun campus and promote student exchange programs and an academic exchange through the establishment of follow-up plans.

  2. Promotion plans
    - Expanding joint and dual degree systems for four-year university students
    - Exporting the curriculum of CBNU
    - Sending Korean language teachers to Yanbian University and running a Korean language institute
    - Implementing transfer and admission programs for three-year college students
    - Exchanging lifelong education programs
    - Establishing a joint research academy with Yanbian University

Currently, not only CBNU but also other universities including Inha University are now trying to find ways to provide their curriculum to overseas universities. The domestic university degrees obtained from overseas universities will be certified by the Minister of Education, and this will provide momentum for CBNU¡¯s plans for its global campus.
