Course registration and course evaluations look like unrelated topics. However, there is something in common. These things proceeded without student opinions.
There was a student who majored in English Language and Literature. The student wanted to register for a major elective in English Language and Literature. However, the student failed to register for the course because other major students registered for the course first. A lot of cases occurred like this, so the Office of Academic Affairs collected students¡¯ complaints and considered this situation. They changed the clause so that students could only register for their own major courses from the 1st day to the 4th day of course registration. Also, all students could register on the 5th day regardless of year. The changed articles were posted one week before opening the course registering basket. Older students, who were sophomores or juniors, and returning students became victims. They didn¡¯t have time to prepare, so they failed to register for some courses and tried to exceed registration. A lot of these students created much controversy in the Chungbuk University Daum cafe. Their general opinion was, ¡°On&On should have checked the policy in advance and moved to a preliminary election.¡±
In regard to students¡¯ complaints, the director in Student Welfare in the GSA Park Sae-ha, said, ¡°We didn¡¯t receive any complaints from students.¡± Also, a related officer in the Office of Academic Affairs said, ¡°Even though we made a grace period, there was no way to change this situation. We already knew that many problems had occurred, especially in the College of Business. It seemed that some students could not register for their regular major electives repeatedly for a long time. We will make an effort to solve this systematic problem with a variety of methods like revision of course registration or enlargement of courses.¡±
The course evaluations issue resembles the case of course registration. The Office of Academic Affairs changed course evaluations in the second semester of 2014. The system was modified to a double evaluation, once a week before the final exam period and once a week after the mid-term period. By contrast, there was only one evaluation time during the grade checking period in the past. We can¡¯t check our grades even if we miss our evaluation once in the modified course evaluations. Even though these are important matters, emails and text messages are the only methods to promote the modified course evaluation. Besides, each department turned out to be taking official documents before the end of the course evaluation period.
Kim Seng-won(¡¯14, the Dept. of Nursing Science) said, ¡°I heard about the modified system through a departmental student representative. There were some students who didn¡¯t receive the email including me.¡±
A related officer in the Office of Academic Affairs said, ¡°We didn¡¯t reflect student opinions. We have a purpose to promote the importance of lecture evaluations because students usually think of lecture evaluations as a procedure to check their grades. We sent text messages to students who didn¡¯t do evaluations, and we postponed the period of evaluations until November 6th for students. We¡¯d like to recommend checking your email account in the school register.¡±
