Yoo Dong-ho, who is a professor of the Dept. of History, said, “The fundamental reason why historical movies have been box office hits is due to the characteristics of the Information Age. With the development of information and communication technology, information and knowledge are shared interactively. Because of this, the slang word ‘faction’, which is a combination of ‘fact’ and ‘fiction’, has appeared. In virtual spaces, people try to satisfy their deficiencies and desires in their real lives by using fiction. In this situation, history becomes a useful method to satisfy the public’s desire. I think this is why our society is in the grip of a historical film fever. Historical films can easily deliver heavy historical facts to the public. That is, historical films can easily and widely deliver their meanings and values to the public, and the audience is exposed to those meanings and values. However, there is also a disadvantage. A lot of fictions are included in the historical contents, so it can distort the historical truths that were taught before. Due to this, the public may have wrong historical points of view. In order to overcome the disadvantages of historical films, a detailed classification of historical films is necessary. Dramas made with material and subject from history are called historical dramas. Historical dramas include movies and TV dramas. Historical dramas can be divided into authentic historical dramas and fictional historical dramas. The main purpose of authentic historical dramas is to reenact history, and using dramatic entertainment is a way for historical dramas to reproduce history. On the other hand, the main purpose of fictional historical dramas is dramatic entertainment. Authentic historical dramas accept little fiction because its main purpose is to reproduce history. Meanwhile, fictional historical dramas accept a wider range of fiction due to the purpose of conveying amusement and new value to the public. Until now, we have considered both types of historical dramas as a single genre called historical dramas. However, as I mentioned, both dramas have history as a motive, but their properties are completely different. Now, it is time to distinguish the roles of authentic and fictional historical dramas. Only in that way can stop drawing historical misconceptions through historical dramas. Authentic historical dramas may be used as a tool for teaching history. Fictional historical dramas may be used as a tool for analyzing the present. In order to complement the weaknesses and emphasize the strengths of authentic dramas, the viewers should go beyond recognizing the drama as a mere tool for arousing interest in history. They should try to search for historic dramas which are based on real history. Also, filmmakers should not overlook the influence of movies and the power of films on the public. When filmmakers make films based on historical facts, it is important to recognize that they should be based on facts and should try to convey history without distortion.”
