There is a play which can make people forget about the depression of 2009. Its name is ¡°Mystery of Sam-Do-bong,¡± which is a satire about various social issues. The play splits the audience¡¯s sides with laughter, and it brings tears from the audience¡¯s eyes.
The play starts as four farmers discover a body chopped into pieces without a head in a U.S.A grain elevator on a stormy night. Mr. Kim, who is the detective on the murder case, commands them to reconstruct the witnessing of the murder. The four farmers replay the situation with their own accent. It gives a lot of humor by replaying the situation. Suddenly, the atmosphere of the play falls into sadness as one farmer starts telling his story that he lost his son because of a peasant movement. The farmer meets with his son in a dream, and it makes the audience sad. Moreover, the play awakes the preciousness of family to the audience.
As previously stated, this play doesn¡¯t just try to be comical, but it suggests social problems through satire. The play shows farmers who suffer from the import of U.S. grain and a marriage fraud with a Southeast Asian woman. It also satirizes the government about its policy for victims of the typhoon.
In the play, various dialects are used: the Gyeong-sang-do dialect, the Chung-cheong-do dialect and the Gang-won-do dialect. These are pretty funny, but also difficult to be interpreted. If you are good at understanding dialects, you can enjoy the play more.
