When I was a high school student, I was afraid to walk at night. I was so scared to take a step into the darkness where I could not see, and I got goosebumps from the slightest sound around me. I had a fear of the dark. As I grew older, I had to walk through the dark streets often. It was an ordeal for me to go home after school or watch a movie late at night. I hated the fact that I was so scared.
Then one day, I met my friends from a long time before and hung out until late at night. After hanging out, I was on my way home. On the way home, someone was tottering down the dark street. At first, I thought it was a drunken man. However, as I got closer, I realized he wasn¡¯t drunk. He was suddenly feeling ill and complaining of pain, and he came up to ask for my help. I had never backed away from helping others, so I took him to the hospital. On my way to the hospital, I never felt afraid of the dark road. The idea of helping diminished my fear. From that day on, I was no longer afraid of the dark and rather enjoyed the situation. I overcame my fears as simple as that.
Everyone lives with at least one fear. There can be many different forms of fear. For some, anxiety causes fear, and for others, experiences with scary things cause fear. Some people cannot overcome their fears or move forward. The sense of accomplishment when overcoming fear can only be felt by those who have achieved it. It¡¯s hard to start, but once people get through it, they¡¯re born anew.
Nowadays, specific fears can be felt among young people. For example, there may be fears of not being able to get a job or not choosing a suitable career. However, if young people don't get through all of this, they will end being frustrated. I want to advise students to try the things they are interested in trying. I think trials and errors don¡¯t just mean failure; they¡¯re the foundation for achievement. However, young people may not easily find their place in society. I hope that they will at least try with courageous efforts.
I am now in the Department of Biochemistry. I am also the editor of the English-language newspaper. I used to think that what I'm doing was taking away the opportunity of someone who wanted to be a reporter. Also, I used to wonder if holding this position might help people who study basic sciences. The only conclusion after making countless speculations was that everything I was doing was intended to raise my values. That is, overcoming fear helps increase my value. I hope that CBNU students will overcome their fears with hardships and suffering and defeat them by approaching them with a more mature perspective.
