[Desk Column] A Society that Recommends You to Drink and Date

The top two questions that I have been asked the most in the university are ¡®Do you want to drink?¡¯ and ¡®Do you have a boyfriend?¡¯. My answer for both questions is no, but that word makes an awkward atmosphere. People usually respond, ¡®Well, okay,¡¯ with unnatural smiles, and I can feel their furtive glances at me.
It is really hard not to drink alcohol at all in Korean society.  Korean games are so unique and interesting that we can proudly offer them to people from different cultures. Anyone in the same place can participate in the games. However, not every person can enjoy the games. If a teetotaler loses the game, the situation is awkward. Many people recently do not force other people to drink and let them abstain from alcohol. Nevertheless, a beer glass and a soju glass, which are naturally on every table, always make me burdened and uncomfortable.
Refusing alcohol is not the only thing that is hard in Korea. I have been an object of ridicule because I don¡¯t have a boyfriend. When I was at an amusement park or on a picnic under the cherry blossom with female friends, my friends usually said to me, ¡°Come here again with your boyfriend next time!¡± It seems there is an invisible restriction on my activities if I don¡¯t have a boyfriend. The reason that Koreans enjoy events such as ¡®Solo Battle¡¯ and even look for a lover on a blind date application may be the inconvenience they¡¯ve experienced as singles.
However, you will lose your true character when you standardize yourself to others. It may sound too obvious, but being faithful to your principle is extremely difficult. However, the time you spend having feelings of doubt wouldn¡¯t be detrimental. You have to prevent wasting your time if you have your own values and follow passionately what you have to do.
As the internet and SNS are developing, communication between people is becoming much easier and we focus on others excessively. Following the majority and being ordinary are worthwhile. However, being unordinary enough is also honorable because we can have our own colors and give a profound impression to others.
