[Reporter's View] Not a Pet, but a Companion Dog
Á¦ 145 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2013.12.02

The number of people who have pets is increasing. However, the more people keep pets, the more the number of abandoned pets rises. It is because most people still consider pets as property.
In Korean shelters for abandoned dogs, abandoned dogs have to be killed by euthanasia if they aren¡¯t adopted within 10 days. The number of people who adopt them is too insufficient as compared with the number of abandoned dogs, so officials in shelters for abandoned dogs have to administer euthanasia. Thus, a compulsory way called the ¡®Pet Registration System¡¯ has been adopted this year. The ¡®Pet Registration System¡¯ is the law for the protection of  companion dogs due to the increase of raising pets and abandoning dogs. Owners who own dogs must register their dogs at municipalities, districts, or district offices. A fine of no more than 400,000 won is imposed on them if they don¡¯t register their dogs, but municipalities and districts which have  below 100,000 people don¡¯t have to follow the regulation. If people lose their companion dogs, they can be found by using the dogs¡¯ information on the Animal Protection Management System.
Dogs are precious. For most people, raising a dog is to take responsibility for a life, so we should think that we will raise them until they die. Animals should be considered as beings that should be protected, and so Germany does. In Germany, abandoned dogs aren¡¯t killed with euthanasia. Targets of euthanasia in Germany are limited to dogs that are almost dead or have extreme behavioral disorders, strong contagions or terrible suffering. Germans think every animal can be adopted, so German officials execute a policy that can protect animals¡¯ lives. The adoption rate of every animal shelter in Germany is more than 90%, and the remaining 10% who have no adoption seekers just stay in the shelter for a long time until they pass away.
A companion dog means that it lives with us together. That is, it is like our companion who is close to us. Dogs have become more than property, but have become companion dogs around us. I am raising a dog now. She came to my home when I was young, and she grew up with me. I want to live with her as long as she lives. Companion dogs are our close friends. We feel happy or sad because of the companion dogs. We feel living and happiness because of their existence. Therefore, we should not abandon our companion dogs!
