Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea, which is a massive international event about the environment, will be held on May 12th. The themes of Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea are ¡®The living sea' and 'The breathing coast¡¯. I think that Korea has never been concerned about the environment until last year. It's because three massive international events besides Expo 2012 Yeosu Korea will open in a row in Korea. For this reason, the world is concentrating on the environmental status of Korea.
However, Korea's level of investing and developing environmental techniques is lower than the levels of developed counties. Korea started implementing the environmental industry and policy 30 years later than developed countries. This is why many things are lacking now in Korea. I think the absence of investment and infrastructure about the environmental industry occurs because of inadequate policies. Political apathy about the environment was revealed in this general election on April 11th. Most candidates did not pay attention to pledges about the environment. Insensibility about the environment causes the environmental policies to be frequently and inconsistently changed. Moreover, evasion of responsibility and overlapping investments are occurring because the responsibility on environmental policies is shared by a number of government departments. The most worrisome thing is that promising technologies and small businesses will die out or will not grow for these reasons.
To resolve this inadequacy and to become a developed country even in environmental aspect, Korea has to promote the environmental industry more. The environmental industry that Korea has to promote is promising small businesses and Korea should not focus on the treatment industry but the prevention industry. The Korean Government has to enforce policies and develop environmental technologies under a coordinated system. However, the most important thing is to have a sense of responsibility about the environment. Environmentally related matters are global and panhuman matters. Therefore, people have to have a sense of responsibility about environmental results from their actions. To achieve this, the Korean government should tighten up surveillance about the environment and establish practical policies to preserve the environment.
