[Desk Column] The Lesson From Flowers on Campus
Á¦ 124 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2011.04.30

When spring comes in CBNU, the cherry blossoms cover the campus and the scene is very beautiful. The cherry trees on campus reminded me of a passage in a book which I recently have read. The passage is, "Every young person desires to be a Japanese Apricot flower which begins to bloom in early spring. However, every flower is beautiful. Japanese Apricots are beautiful and Chrysanthemums, which blossom late in the fall, are also beautiful." I also answer that the Japanese Apricot flower is good when someone asks what my favorite flower is. People want to succeed earlier than other people just as Japanese Apricots come into bloom first.

The passage, "Chrysanthemums are also beautiful," comforted me when I felt I was falling behind the others in a certain race.

Three students consecutively chose suicide at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) this year. One student attended an engineering high school and excelled in robot technology. KAIST is one of several prestigious universities in Korea, and the freshmen are also very outstanding, but there is keen competition between them. Some reforms to improve their students¡¯ abilities created an uncomfortable atmosphere and the students felt heavy pressure.

The present young students have been pushed to be competitive in both school and society since their childhoods. It is sad to pay attention only to the victor or the best, ignoring the efforts of other people. If the three students at KAIST had known the beauty of Rose Mosses in summer and Sunflowers in autumn, they would not have taken their own lives, I hope.
Actually, I think positively about the word ¡®competition.¡¯ Society can develop efficiently by fierce competition between people. Although competition has caused negative effects, its positive effect of contribution is considerable. This year, Chungbuk National University reformed its evaluation system. Most exams are graded on a curve starting this year. I believe the reform will help students to improve their competitiveness.

The cherry blossoms on campus fell off. Some flowers are blossoming on campus next to the cherry trees, and other flowers are preparing to blossom in other seasons. The flowers on campus teach young students a lesson that flowering first or quickly is not important.
