The slogan "Hope of Chungju, Pride of Chungbuk" is written in the parking lot of the Head Office building. Whenever I pass by that building, I think that is a very peaceful motto considering that other universities are competing for globalization.
Recently, more universities are comprised of students and faculty from various nations. Kent Kamasumba(21year, Jambiya) was aired on a TV program, so the whole nation know about his admission to Seoul National University. Each university is eager to increase inbound globalization, making their campus more worldly.
An evaluation about domestic universities, conducted by Jooangang Education Development Institute, was publicized last week. CBNU ranked 28th. CBNU received 11.78 in the globalization category, which was nearly at the bottom among all participants. All indexes for globalization are below the average.
It is fairly regretful that CBNU did poorly in the appointment of foreign professors(full-time) and exchange student scholarships; CBNU was 79th and 92nd respectively. Compared with other high-ranking universities, our circumstance has fallen far behind.
To globalize CBNU, the constituent members should change first. People in charge of the Office of Academic Affairs announced that there were only 50 lectures conducted in English. He added, "Since CBNU has few foreign professors it's hard to give lectures in English." However, I do not think so. We should not focus on what we don't have and we should change what we already have step by step.
Unfortunately, in this evaluation by JEDI, CBNU's exchange student scholarship program was ranked 92nd, the lowest. Our school has not supported students enough. In this situation, some students go abroad to study English using their own money. It's insufficient. Not just students studying English, we need all students to study their fields in English. Student exchange scholarships should be more easily accessible.
CBNU shouldn't be satisfied with just "Pride of Cheongju." We have enough potential. I wish that my school and my friends would serve the international community. Our software: our mind, attitude and ambition should be globalized first.
