In Kyungnam University, there was an announcement that the departments of Sociology and Philosophy which were unpopular subjects were eliminated in the course of closing or combining basic sciences. After looking at the announcement, Park Min-gun, who is the student president of Sociology, submitted an article to Hankyoreh Newspaper. He said, "Basic science is worthy beyond money, and nobody can deprive students of the right to learn it."
Humanities is the study which explores humans. Namely, it researches what humans are and what humans do. Therefore, Humanities exists throughout our lives. Practical sciences, like business administration, law, and medicine, are closely related to finding a job after graduation. On the other hand, Humanities majors don't seem to correlate with employment. Now is the time of the crisis of Humanities in Korea because Korea suffers from a serious unemployment.
Whenever I heard that Humanities majors weren't profitable, I was concerned since I am a Humanities student. After a vague fear about the future grew inside me, I was debating whether I should change my major to another one not related to Humanities. Just in time, I encountered books dealing with success stories about Humanities, and the books changed my opinion. All the books were saying, "By demonstrating humanistic knowledge and refinements which build up through Humanities, people can succeed." Park Woong-hyun is an advertising man. He isn't well known for his name and face, but everybody may have heard at one time his TV advertising slogans such as 'White paper of modern life' and 'Necktie and blue jeans are equal.' He usually appreciates lots of books, movies, and pictures, and has humanistic knowledge and refinements from those appreciations. He said the knowledge and refinements have been a great help for him to become a good advertising man. If people take this into consideration, the future of Humanities will be different promising.
