When I entered CBNU in 2008, I didn¡¯t have an appointed department because I entered into the system faculty that consisted of the Department of Public Administration, the Department of Political Science and International Relations, and the Department of Economics. Actually, I applied for this faculty to major in Public Administration. However, I decided to study Economics after thinking about my future and aptitude more carefully for a year.
The faculty system gives a chance for students to think of a proper major. When they were high school students, the opportunity when they could acquire information about majors was limited to just surfing the internet and consulting with other people. However, students can learn experiences which can help them choose a more suitable major for them through the faculty system. Also, the faculty system is competent for a university¡¯s essential goal to teach cultural knowledge to students. However, the faculty system also has weak points. The students who have a conviction for their major from their entrance have to listen to courses that don¡¯t relate with their aptitude. In addition, the time for studying their major is naturally shorter because it takes time to find a proper major for them. As a result, students¡¯ ability and competitive power related to their major is lower. Also, they have to compete with classmates, so they feel just like fourth grade students in high school.
CBNU abrogated the faculty system except for some departments. Faculty system has merits and demerits at the same time. Therefore, abrogating the faculty system isn¡¯t the best method. We should renew the system and improve it to be a suitable and educational environment to show its merit.
