CBNU students frequently received messages from CBNU. However, they are not urgent messages related to class or personal affairs. Most messages from CBNU are about job requirements, seminars or lecturing programs. The messages are sent by CBNU¡¯s supporting facilities and affiliated facilities, for example, the Recruitment Support Headquarters and the Teaching Support Center.
Some students may think it¡¯s not that big of a problem, but others may think otherwise. There are many opinions that the unwanted messages from CBNU are an abuse of students¡¯ information because they received unwanted messages a couple of times in a day or week. Therefore, students started to feel annoyed. For example, some students wrote on CBNU¡¯s official Daum Cafe to ask how to stop the messages from CBNU. In the cafe, students think the numbers of messages are too excessive. They think the messages have to be used in official affairs such as classes and contacting professors. Moreover, some students asked to the Recruitment Support Headquarters to stop sending the messages to them; however, the messages didn¡¯t stop.
Park Hi-ju(¡¯14, Dept. of English Language and Literature) said, ¡°I understand CBNU¡¯s effort to notify us about lots of good programs via text messages. However, I think the university has to make a guideline for the students who don¡¯t want these messages.¡±
Every shopping site uses members¡¯ personal information and they have to ask members¡¯ agreement to receive their messages. Sending unwanted information to many and unspecified people is called spam. That situation is just happening in CBNU. Students don¡¯t know whether they agreed to receive a message or not. Furthermore, they didn¡¯t get any notice about how they can stop the messages. Students need a formal process to stop receiving messages and CBNU should have to notify them.
One of the officers in the Recruitment Support Headquarters said, ¡°When the job recruiting season arrives, we send messages to students for 5 to 6 times in a day to inform about related programs. The receiver can be every student in CBNU or certain college students depending on what programs are available. However, we only send a text message to students who already checked and agreed about receiving messages. We don¡¯t send it to students who don¡¯t agree. We pay for each message we sent because the messaging system is not free to us. According to that reason, to save our budget, we only send it to students who already agreed. I believe there must be a miscommunication between students and our facility. Sometimes, our system sends it to graduates and employed students about job recruiting information and they ask us to stop messaging. However, there is no way we can do because we can¡¯t control the system without their ID code and password in our homepage. For that reason, we tell the students who called us to check their personal information in our homepage. Therefore, the students who don¡¯t want to receive the messages should just go the Recruitment Support Headquarters homepage and log-in. Then, check the personal information and click the ¡®not to receive messages¡¯ button.¡±
The messages¡¯ motivation is that CBNU¡¯s effort to provide useful information to as many students as possible. However, because of that problem, some students experience inconveniences. They need a countermeasure.
