Some college students work in their department office as Department Office Labor Scholarship Students and they don¡¯t receive a scholarship or hourly wage.
The Labor Scholarship Students are divided into the Welfare Service Scholarship Students(WSSS) and the College Labor Scholarship Students(CLSS). The WSSS work in school facilities for more than 20 hours but less than 40 hours per a month. The CLSS are selected by each department¡¯s assistant. These students do trivial work, such as cleaning, copying documents and errands in their department office for a term, and they receive a class C scholarship that remits their tuition fees. However, grade scholarship students and students who did not receive any scholarships are working in some departments.
Seo Jeong-min, who works in the Department of Student Affairs, said about this issue, ¡°A student who is not a Labor Scholarship Student must not work in a department office in principle. We have received many complaints from students and school parents about this issue. However, we can only warn each department to follow principles because the selection of Labor Scholarship Students is under the jurisdiction of the department assistant.¡± A reporter asked her whether this problem has happened because of the lack of budget. She said, ¡°Each college¡¯s budget is commensurate with the number of enrolled students. However, colleges which have a few enrolled students may have a small budget assignment for Labor Scholarship Students. Therefore, some colleges can necessarily put students that receive other scholarships to work as the Labor Scholarship Students.¡±
CLSS are selected in different ways for each college because each department¡¯s assistant manages this. In the case of the College of Commerce and Business Administration, students with last term¡¯s GPA higher than C+ are selected as the Labor Scholarship students on a first-come first-served basis. On the other hand, the College of Education¡¯s students work compulsorily in the department office because this college has fewer students than others. A student who belongs to College of Education said, ¡°I have worked in the department office without a wage because of the small-scale of our college. I think working in the department office is a kind of labor that must receive a wage, but I didn¡¯t receive anything. This is unfair.¡± The student seemed to be full of complaints about working in the department office. The College of Education¡¯s other student said, ¡°The Department Labor is not difficult, so I don¡¯t care whether I receive a scholarship or not. I like to work in the department office because I can make friends with the assistant and seniors. In addition, it is nice to be able know quickly about events that occur in our department.
