B+ GSA ON&ON in Silence
Á¦ 153 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2014.12.01

There might not ever be a GSA like ON&ON, which started off terribly from their election day. When ON&ON was campaigning, they received a lot of criticisms from students because of their very easy promises and following promises which ex-GSA's made already. Also, they were criticized because they didn't promote their promises but only asked students to vote for their campaign on the placards. After they were elected as the next GSA, there was a rumor where the GSA president and other colleges' presidents drank alcohol in a pub with some girls. The rumor was spread by an anonymous student. The onset of ON&ON was really worrying, so CBT reporters arranged issues and evaluated their promises through a survey. -Ed.

How the survey was conducted
CBT reporters gave the survey to 659 students. ON&ON¡¯s promises on the survey pertaining to culture, welfare, jobs, communication and festivals were referred to as 2013 ON&ON¡¯s promotion pamphlet. CBT reporters showed students ON&ON¡¯s promises, and students could absolutely evaluate each promise. Also, there were students¡¯ overall evaluations of ON&ON with credit points, students¡¯ hopes for the next GSA and students¡¯ disappointments about GSAs. This survey was conducted from November 19th to 21st.

Student satisfaction rate about culture & welfare
Most of ON&ON¡¯s promises were focused on culture and welfare. The GSA president said, ¡°I wanted to give benefits to as many students as possible in the part of welfare and culture. I wanted to increase student participation through many events. Therefore, I hoped that students would enjoy campus life. That was the reason why ON&ON created those events.¡± Most of the students were also satisfied with ON&ON¡¯s promises. In the case of culture promises, over 37% students answered ¡®satisfied¡¯ and ¡®very satisfied¡¯. In the case of welfare events, 46% students answered ¡®satisfied¡¯ and ¡®very satisfied¡¯.

Student satisfaction rate about jobs
In the job survey, 36.3% students answered ¡®satisfied¡¯ and ¡®very satisfied¡¯, and 25% students answered ¡®not satisfied¡¯, ¡®very not satisfied¡¯ and ¡®not interested¡¯. It indicates that job promises and festival promises are difficult to appease many students¡¯ various desires. Also, ON&ON¡¯s Expo, which was held during the Sewol ferry disaster¡¯s mourning period, could be one of the reasons for this bad result. However, most of all, GSA didn¡¯t have enough financial and professional ability to make those events successful.

Student satisfaction rate about communication
There were three ways to communicate with ON&ON. They had a kakaotalk account(on8on), a facebook page and a phone line. ON&ON had 3,319 students who pressed ¡®like¡¯ on their facebook page and the students could see ON&ON¡¯s postings. However, there were many uncertain parts whether they really communicated well with students or not. In the case of their their kakaotalk account, no one knows how many students used it, and it¡¯s impossible to count them because students who talked with ON&ON through kakaotalk left the room. In the case of their facebook account, it was not a bilateral communication space but only a promotional space for them. In the survey, although there were many students who checked ¡®satisfied¡¯ and ¡®very satisfied¡¯ about their communication, many students hope the next GSA will communicate with them better.

Student satisfaction rate about the festivals and events
In the festival survey, there were certainly many students who checked ¡®not good and not bad¡¯ compared with other groups. About the survey¡¯s result, the GSA president said, ¡°I really don¡¯t know. There were many students who liked these festivals around me, and we invited five singers, prepared 2,000 gifts for students and ran 72 booths during the main festival season.¡± In reply to the question, ¡°Why did the GSA hold main festivals during the exam period?¡± The GSA president said, ¡°I didn¡¯t want to hold a festival at the same time with other colleges¡¯ festivals because many students would enjoy the main festival and not their college festivals. Also, the colleges¡¯ presidents didn¡¯t want it. They wanted  to hold their own festivals.¡±
A CBT reporter asked about building pubs during the festivals, and he said, ¡°I don¡¯t think drinking alcohol during festivals is a good idea. We can make festivals more fun without alcohol.¡± When asked why GSA invited many singers during the festival, the GSA president said, ¡°By inviting many signers, I hoped that students could choose their favorite singers. I don¡¯t think the quality of the festival was lowered because of it.¡±

The final evaluation result of ON&ON by students
In the survey, ON&ON received a B+ from students. Among 659 students, 46 students checked A+, 188 students checked A0, 180 students checked B+, 156 students checked B0, 55 students checked C+, 24 students checked C0, 9 students checked D and 1 student checked F. However, there were a lot of students¡¯ opinions that it is difficult to evaluate about ON&ON because ON&ON didn¡¯t have influence on the students.

There was a 3rd lawsuit about school-supporting dues by some universities this year, and some Seoul National University and Korea Advanced Institution of Science and Technology students retrieved some of their school-supporting dues. Meanwhile, there were a few reports about CBNU GSA¡¯s reaction about school-supporting dues. A CBT reporter interviewed the GSA president about it.

Reporter: What did you think about the school-supporting dues issue?
President: CBNU cannot refund the money, and students wanted a refund without a legal basis. I think we need a communication space to talk about it. However, after the decision about school-supporting dues by the Supreme Court, we may make alternative ways.

Reporter: Did GSA publicize about school-supporting dues to gather students¡¯ opinions?
President: No. Only central association members talked about it.

Reporter: What is the reason for not participating in the 3rd lawsuit?
President: I never received any information about it. I just received a suggestion inviting me to join a meeting of national universities¡¯ presidents by e-mail, but I didn¡¯t know the 3rd lawsuit was related to it. Also, most of the participants of the meeting were activist groups, so I didn¡¯t participate in it.

Reporter: There was news that the CBNU GSA is preparing for a lawsuit to refund school-supporting dues.
President: That¡¯s not true. We just talked about it.

Reporter: Why does the CBNU GSA not take action against the government about requiring financial responsibility for national universities?
President: We didn¡¯t do anything about it, but I can require the
government to do that and pass it over to the next GSA.
