Environment-friendly Companies of Korea
Á¦ È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2010.11.28
Korea is endeavoring at nuturing Green Comanies.

The 21st century is a great time where eco-friendly technologies enable companies to make money. General Electric, a leading company with Green Growth technology, announced the slogan "Green is Green." The initial "green" means environment and the latter refers to the green color of a dollar, namely profits.
Green Growth aims to harmonize the economy with the environment by decreasing damage to the ecosystem through effectively managing energy and resources and creating jobs based on the research and development of clean energy. "Green Company" is an official name which the Ministry of Environment gives to eco-friendly businesses. The Ministry of Environment expects that the environment-friendly businesses will be superior to others in green management around the world, with this change as a momentum. The primary activities of  green management include using clean energy, considering the environment in the production process, and strengthening of the supervision of pollutants. Up to now, a total of 188 companies have qualified as Green Companies.
An online survey company, Macromill Korea, examined 1,000 people who were aged from 20 to 50 in 2009. It surveyed the consumers' recognition of the representative businesses of Korea which fulfill green management well. As a result of the investigation, Yuhan-Kimberly, Samsung and POSCO ranked 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. Yuhan-Kimberly has shown its outstanding ability to take action in terms of reduction of greenhouse gases. It has reduced the emissions of greenhouse gases by using low-carbon fuels and conducted a public interest campaign for afforestation, so it planted about 5,050,000 trees and created approximately 7,533 hectares of forest in Korea. Moreover, it practices using lights of LED(Light Emitting Diode) to raise energy efficiency, saving energy by improving the exhaust device, and using power-saving equipment. Samsung introduced the managing system "Greenhouse Gas Inventory", which is used to precisely record the sources, kinds, and details about the discharge of greenhouse gases. Thanks to the system, Samsung has effectively controlled greenhouse gases. Also, the amount of greenhouse gases has decreased by 31% in the last 2 years due to new facilities that reduce the gases. POSCO is eliminating dust, which occurs in its factories, by upgrading sprinkler automation systems and enhancing the density of green belts. In addition, it is recycling as much as 98% of its water, which is used in the steel-making process.
Meanwhile, a company desiring to become a Green Company has to pass evaluation standards of designation systems for a Green Company. The main standards include reduction of contaminants and the performance of environmental improvement. If some companies are certified as Green Companies, the government will provide the companies with incentives like support for publicity and marketing, use of the logo on packaging and promotional materials, indicating a Green Company on packaging and promotional materials, and additional points when the government selects support businesses which nurture the environmental industry. "Korean 'Green Company' will never fall behind in the certification criteria of green management compared with other countries. Furthermore, we will spare no effort to help Green Company at the government level. We aim to make our Green Company's position as a leading global brand," said the Minister of Environment, Lee Maan-ee.
