What Do Immigrants Affect on Korean Society
Á¦ 120 È£    ¹ßÇàÀÏ : 2010.11.01

According to Ministry of public Administration and Security, the number of foreigners who live in Korea is about 1.2 million. They take up 2.2 percent of registrated population. As Korea has become a  multi-cultural society, culture and policies have been changing.
Multi-cultural families affect Korea's policies. As multi-cultural families are increasing, the government is implementing measures from various angles for the creation of a multi-cultural society such as enactment of the Supporting Act for Multi-cultural Families, setting the budget and, starting a policy planning committee.
Also, it promotes elements of education that reflect multi-cultural issues in curriculum. The government is implementing educational and public relations policies to improve the perception of immigrants by expanding a 'Cross Cultural Awareness Program' and 'UNESCO Associated Schools'.
The increase of the migrant population affects Korea's population size. Some experts predict that the largest possible population size will be 50 million and then population is scheduled to be decreasing, however, As multi-cultural a families are increasing, the decrease in Korea's total population has been delayed by about ten years. Multi-cultural families play a role in aiding Korea with its low birthrates and its speedy aging process. The foreigners who live in Korea also can exercise the right to vote. If immigrants remain in Korea for three years after receiving citizenship, they can vote. Actually, 6,500 foreigners participated in the 2006 local election.
As multi-cultural families are increasing, many parties have appointed foreigners  as nominated candidates. For example, Lee-ra, who is a Mongolian migrant woman, was selected as a representative in the Grand National Party on the June 2nd local election. It cleanly shows that immigrants exercise political leverage in Korea.
Today, multi-cultural families are rapidly increasing. Korea also has become a multi-cultural society, but it is only in its early stages. At this time, the Korean society should recognize this changes and make an effort to be more diversified.
