Lately, when we flip through TV channels, we can see many similar formats of programs. For representative examples, there are the programs ¡®Dad, Where Are You Going?¡¯ and ¡®Superman Has Returned¡¯. The two variety shows are alike in terms of being shows where fathers take care of their children and stay together without mothers.
Because there are lots of similar TV programs, viewers frown even before watching a program when they hear the similar formats of new programs that will come out. Actually, when ¡®Mamado¡¯ was expected to telecast, there were lots of negative opinions about the program because of the similarity with the existing TV program ¡®Grandpa Over Flowers¡¯. People thought it followed exactly with the same concept of grandfathers traveling by themselves and in the composition of members, which is made up of 4 elders and 1 carrier. However, ¡®Mamado¡¯ was broadcast, and, because of a poor viewing rate, it is taking steps to go off the air in early April. People view a TV program as a fake program when they see a show that is the same as other existing programs.
However, should we always think negatively just because it is imitated? There is a sentence, ¡®Imitation is the mother of creation¡¯. Many famous architects and painters showed their own personality by following the works of the people whom they admired. TV programs are not different from architecture or paintings. Of course, if a TV program is made exactly the same as an existing program, then that is really a fake program. However, a fresh, new program can be created even if the basic frame is from a popular program if it is developed and changed. There is a successful program as an example. ¡®Immortal Classic¡¯ is a TV program which took the basic frame from the program called, ¡®I¡¯m a singer¡¯. In the initial stage, it was a competition between idol singers. As time passed, it changed and did not limit the singers to idol singers, so good singers could compete with each other. Therefore, it caught a high viewing rate and also discovered outstanding singers.
Personally, I think a TV program can make its own uniqueness if it develops its own characteristics even though it followed an existing TV show. Therefore, we must not view the programs as fake programs just because of a similarity with other programs. Before judging the program, we have to realize whether it followed existing programs exactly or differentiated itself from others. Blame or praise should be given after an accurate judgement.
