Civil and military experts concluded that a North Korean torpedo was the reason for the sinking of the Cheonan warship on May 20th. As a result, the government decided to implement a restrictive policy toward North Korea.
It's not the first time for North Korea to attack us. Six navy soldiers were killed in a 2002 YeonPyeong naval battle. Likewise, North Korea has done provocative things in many ways.
In addition, South Korea security seems unsafe in other areas. In succeession of spy Won Jeng-hwa in 2008, an anti-South spy, Kim Mi-hwa(36) was caught stealing classified documents about Seoul's subway networks.
South Korea caught the world's eyes as it is hosting the G20 summit this year. Therefore, we have to handle the crisis diplomatically. First, the government should hold North Korea responsible and make them recognize their acts. North Korea insists on sending their own inspectors to South Korea. The government needs to pressure North Korea to concede their acts formally. Second, we should take lessons from this tragedy in that we did not recognize the approach of North Korea's submarine at all. The Minister of Defense, Kim Tae-young, announced that anti-submarine discipline training will be carried out soon in the West Sea. Not only the navy, but also the army and the air force need to acquire developed skills.
According to the survivors of the Cheonan warship, they did not have training on escaping from the ship. In the future, the whole army forces need to undergo training for emergencies. Third, the government needs to reinforce a sense of national security properly for its people. It is said that the textbooks fail to discuss national security and only focus on the need to unify. It is good to seek peace. However, it is also important to teach people about alterness. Because we are in a state of armistice.
Korea needs to recognize that this problem is not only an issue for Koreans. We need to discuss this problem with the countries in the six party talks. Therefore, we should avoid military actions which might worsen the state of affairs.
