Why Are People Captivated by Running?
Running has grown from a simple form of exercise into a widely enjoyed activity because it is easy to start and fits well with today¡¯s digital lifestyle. There is no need to join a gym or buy specialized equipment. A pair of running shoes is enough and people can run whenever they have time. Runners are able to begin with a distance and pace that match their fitness level. Another appeal of running is that it can be enjoyed with others. Through running groups, people can meet new friends and share both the enjoyment of running and the sense of achievement that comes from reaching their goals. Furthermore, smartwatch and running applications have also changed how people record and share their runs. Many runners post screenshots showing their distance, time, pace, and route on social media. Through other people¡¯s posts, they discover new running courses and races. They also encourage one another through comments and reactions.
This culture of tracking and sharing runs can motivate people to continue. As their running records build up, they naturally set new goals such as completing 3, 5, or 10 km. Sharing these achievements on social media gives runners an additional sense of accomplishment. Running has become part of digital culture and a way for people to share their daily lives and personal growth. With its low barrier to start, the culture of tracking and sharing runs, and the enjoyment of running together, running has become an attractive part of daily life for many people.
Want to Start Running? Places to Run in Cheongju
For those who want to start running but do not know where to go, here are some popular running spots in Cheongju. Musimcheon Stream is one of the most popular places for runners in the city. Some people may know it mainly as a famous spot for cherry blossoms, but many local residents enjoy walking and running there throughout the year. Runners can easily be seen along the stream, especially after sunset. Its long and mostly flat path also makes it a comfortable place to run for beginners.
Cho Seong-yeon (School of Semiconductor Engineering, 21) chose Musimcheon as his favorite place to run. He first began walking along the stream because he was bored with spending so much time at home. His walks gradually turned into runs as he wanted to improve his fitness and work up a sweat. Before long, he found himself enjoying running. ¡°When I run along the well-maintained course by the stream while listening to my favorite music, it naturally helps clear my mind,¡± Cho said. ¡°The refreshing feeling and sense of achievement I get when I take a shower after a run are what keep me running.¡± he added.

Once runners become comfortable with flat courses, they can try a route with uphill and downhill sections such as the Uamsan trail. Trail running requires more energy than running on flat ground, but adjusting one¡¯s pace to the changing slopes can make the experience more interesting. The forest scenery and the view overlooking Cheongju also offer a different kind of running experience.
The final recommended location is CBNU stadium, which is popular among both students and local residents. Its well-maintained track makes it suitable for beginners and allows runners to easily check their distance and pace. The track fills with people after sunset. Even when running alone, moving in the same direction as others can make runners feel as though they are exercising together and give them extra motivation.
Running Indoors During the Summer Heat: Insiderun
Extreme heat and high humidity are major challenges for runners during the summer. Running too hard under strong sunlight and in high temperatures can lead to dehydration or heat-related illness, so runners need to take extra care.
As these risks increase, indoor running has become an alternative for people who want to run without being limited by the weather. One example is Insiderun, an indoor event for runners who find it difficult to exercise outside during the summer.

Insiderun is a 10 km race in which participants complete 10 laps of a 1 km indoor course. During the race, each runner¡¯s time and lap count are shown on a large display in real time, allowing participants to check their progress and adjust their pace. A CBT reporter took part in an Insiderun event held at KINTEX in Ilsan. On Aug. 1, 2026, the temperature outside reached 33 ¡É and a heat wave warning was in effect. Although it was stifling hot outside, about 300 runners filled the indoor course with energy. Kim Ju-han (Anyang), who has been running for 12 years, learned about Insiderun through his running club. ¡°It is great to be able to enjoy running indoors during the hot summer,¡± Kim said. ¡°During the summer, runners should check their physical condition and focus on running safely instead of pushing themselves to improve their times.¡± However, Insiderun also has some limitations. Because it takes place indoors, participants must repeatedly run the same course, and the size of the venue limits the number of runners. Even so, as extreme weather becomes more common, indoor tracks and treadmills are becoming practical options for people who want to continue exercising safely.
Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Run
Running is easy to start and does not require special equipment, but pushing oneself without considering one¡¯s physical condition can lead to injury or illness. During the summer, runners should choose cooler times of day such as early morning or evening, and drink enough water before and after running.
Beginners should not aim for a fast pace or a long distance from the start. It is better to alternate between walking and running and slowly increase the amount of exercise. Because running repeatedly puts pressure on the feet and knees, warming up before a run and stretching afterward are also important.
If symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, chills, or severe shortness of breath occur during a run, runners should stop immediately and rest in a shaded or cool place. Staying healthy enough to enjoy the next run is more important than slightly improving their time.
It is not essential to run fast when starting out. Running slowly today and going a little farther next time is enough. By moving forward step by step at their own pace, anyone can make running a healthy and enjoyable part of daily life.
